Feature on Basket Basket

Feature on BasketBasket: Our Recent Competition Winner!

We recently ran a competition to celebrate reaching 3000 likes on Facebook (Yummy Mummies - Business Mums page) and the winner was the wonderful BasketBasket. They sell some absolutely gorgeous baskets in various styles, sizes and colours suitable for many different purposes from shopping baskets to handbags to beach bags. They are unique and stylish and are perfect for your shopping or would make fabulous presents. The colourful African baskets they sell would also look fantastic in your home as decoration or even as a super chic storage alternative. Here’s a little bit more about them...

BasketBasket is a family run business based in north east Hampshire. Having lived in France, owner and mother of two, Virginia fell in love with baskets but could never find them in the UK. So in January 2007 was launched selling a small range of the classic palm leaf baskets. By October 2008 we decided to expand the range and re-launched as BasketBasket with our main aim being to offer these fabulous baskets as an eco-friendly alternative to the wretched plastic bag.

We have carefully sourced our range of baskets so we can provide them as fair trade and help ensure that these talented artisans’ skills are continued for future generations. The majority of our baskets come from a family business in Morocco and the round Bolgatanga baskets come from a women’s cooperative in northern Ghana, which was created to support the women of this region to improve the quality of their lives through education, loans and mutual self-help.

All of the baskets are made with natural sustainable products - palm leaf, reed and elephant grass (known as Veta Vera). They have leather handles which are sewn or woven, so no plastic or metal is used. The palm leaf and reed baskets take between 5-8 hours to weave, with the leather being added at the end. The large round elephant grass Bolga baskets take up to 3 days to make. So every basket is truly unique.

We also have colourful baskets and giraffes made of raffia from Madagascar. The giraffes are made with straw and then the raffia is woven round to create these wonderful animals. They are created by a small family business in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, who are working to create a better life for themselves and provide a decent education for their children.

We sell the baskets and giraffes from our website - - and at fairs, mainly in the south of England. When we post them, we use environmentally friendly packaging - brown paper, biodegradable bubble wrap and water-based acrylic adhesive tape. We aim to offer first class service and prompt delivery at competitive prices.

This all came about because Virginia was made redundant when both her children were still very small. With a background in new media, an online store seemed a good idea and so basket selling from home came into place.

Virginia says: “I’ve always loved baskets and used them for many years, so starting this business has been a joy. Each delivery is exciting because the baskets are so unique. Selling them to other basket loving people is always fun as we receive wonderful, enthusiastic feedback! Then there is the added bonus of being around my children as they grow, as well as having my husband as a very supportive partner in the business. I feel very lucky to be in this position and hope that baskets will take over from plastic bags in future!”
